Sustainable sources
Our choice of material for our products helps us reduce our environmental impact. All of our main production facilities have been granted the right to use the Swan eco label, meaning that all the materials used there meet the label’s environmental requirements. Our Edita Västra Aros facility in Sweden received our first wood-origin authentication certificate in 2008. This enables Edita Västra Aros to provide our customers with FSC-branded print products. Our Edita Prima facility in Finland received similar PEFC authentication in May 2009. The system ensures that wood we use in our printing products comes from environmentally, socially and economically well-managed forests.
Climate neutrality
In 2008, we carried out a complete analysis of our carbon and greenhouse-gas emissions. In Sweden, we have received the Climate Neutral Company accreditation and we are working to ensure the rest of the company follows suit. We offset our carbon and greenhouse-gas emissions by funding a United Nations-supported project in India that increases the use of renewable energy by producing electricity from agricultural waste for local needs.
Waste minimization
In 2002, we recycled 70 percent of our print production waste, while today that figure has increased to 93 percent. The remaining seven percent is disposed of appropriately. No printing production waste ends up in landfills.
Energy efficiency
We use renewable energy to produce printed materials and also to light and air-condition our production facilities. Across the company, we are working to reduce consumption. Energy efficiency and renewable energy are key elements in our sustainable-energy policy. We achieve this by using energy-efficient technologies and production processes, and by changing individual behavior. These activities not only reduce our energy consumption, but also our operational expenditure, making our communications services and solutions more cost-effective.
Raising awareness
We strive to increase the value of our communications solutions by focusing on environmental issues in all our business operations. This is reflected in all that we do and the way we do it. We also work to raise environmental awareness among our stakeholders. We provide our customers, partners and employees with environmental information to help them reduce their own environmental impact through the type of communications solutions they choose. By the end of 2009, all of our employees will have taken part in a comprehensive environmental education program, the “environmental driving license.”
